• At least they can be picky about who comes in now.

    In theory yes.

On paper, the language is tougher,

    "reduce overall levels of migration"

"We need to shift the focus of our economy away from a reliance on cheap labour from Europe and instead concentrate on investment in technology and automation. Employers will need to adjust."

Which is all well and good

BUT lowering the threshold for what is considered a "skilled worker" income that can contribute undermines that.

Those already here may also stay.

The man on the street will see no difference.

And if they set their immigration targets high enough there may not even be a difference at all.

  • Apparently no one in limey land is worried about the covid anymore?

    lazs

Well our "do well" target was under 22,000 deaths, we are at 36,793, but things to do seem to be improving.

We are trying to ease lockdown at the moment but the advice from the goverment seems a bit all over the place, also there is an issue of a senior member of parliment was flaunting lockdown when the rest of us were told to stay in our home or risk fines, so thats the latest scandal.

  • Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, Jeros. California's agriculture industry depends upon cheap Mexican labor that is exempt from all protections- no minimum wage, no minimum age- @Ack Ack, you wanna discuss this with me? You wanna talk about how migrant workers are housed in substandard housing, kids are denied access to education, and work the fields at 12 years old? I spent my summers as a kid picking cantaloupe, tomatoes, whatever- I was fortunate enough to be able to go to school when summer ended but the Mexican kids weren't.

Coming back from lazs' place last night we passed a group of farmworkers tending grape vines- you want to talk about the hypocrisy of a Democratic State that preaches justice for all yet denies workers protections afforded to the rest of us?

What have you ever done for farmworkers Ack Ack? After we passed that vineyard I told Steph about meeting Caesar Chavez, about the pro bono work I did in the early 70s for the UFW, about getting busted for "distributing subversive literature" and how Swords to Plowshares hired me a civilian attorney and got the charges dropped even though it was still in my docket.

Did you weigh in with an email to your State legislator a couple of years ago when they stonewalled extending workers' rights to ag workers? Where were you on that? I mean, you called me a racist against Hispanics but I'll bet you don't do shit- and I do. I don't think Mexican kids should be deprived of an education because their parents are paid less than minimum wage so they lie about their kids' ages, and the vineyards have a deal with the labor contractors so there's a wink and a nod and instead of being in school that kid is in the fields.

We live in a society that depends upon a segment of that society to be slave labor. Picking cotton 200 years ago or picking grapes today- it's all the same.

  • That's a good illustration of the fact that we don't have a left wing in this country. I don't know what the fuck the Democratic Party is. But it's not left wing.

Tell me again who much more enlightened you are than those more "conservative" than yourself- my cousin Jay, a retired schoolteacher who now lives in Boise in the summer and in Arizona in the winter, teaches conversational English to Mexicans at his local JC. He does this for free- he sees the human aspect of people, and not their value for economic or political gain.

What do you Goat? What do you do to make things better? I don't do as much as I did, or should- I'm still on the board of directors at our local Humane Society- but one thing I've noticed is people like you don't do shit. Well, you complain- but other than that you do nothing. I've cleaned up abandoned homeless encampments, and my daughter fosters animals and makes and distributes lunches for low income people... What the fuck do you do?

When it comes right down to it when given the opportunity to actually roll up your sleeves and do something you don't- at least Ack Ack is out there doing something. WTF are you doing?

  • That's a good illustration of the fact that we don't have a left wing in this country. I don't know what the fuck the Democratic Party is. But it's not left wing.

Perhaps you should educated yourself about Collectivization as it relates to farming with slave labor in Socialist Countries. That will be your lot if the Left takes over in this country.

  • anyone il that doesn't see that as an age old immutable part of the human condition is delusional.

Why are Cuban immigrants at the top of the food chain in their communities?

Many Mexicans too. If the Mexicans are being exploited it's by other Mexicans.

The difference is the huge numbers of Mexicans that flee Messko voluntarily because as bad as you think they have it here to them it's a step up.

    9066 the left

  • There is no left in this country. Biden is doing his job, handing over more money and more power to a few billionaires. Just like you bootlickers.

Do you think things are any better in Scroatia or whatever old home country that your ancestors came from?

Coercive collective action in the name of the greater good not only is immoral—who decides who has the gun?—it also is destructive of human happiness and ruinous of human potential.

  • There is no left in this country. Biden is doing his job, handing over more money and more power to a few billionaires. Just like you bootlickers.

The Left is and always was about power for the few. You want to experience full Leftism go live on a farm in China or Venezuela.

  • Yeah... gotta say I agree with storch on this. We used to have a program... a guest worker one that worked. Dusty buses. Shitty housing on the farmers land. Only adult males were allowed at first. They got paid what to them was a kings fortune and worked seasonal then went home. That is the solution and do that again.

The Mexicans that are doing well here are often exploiting their fellows. Or.... just working really really hard in their own business. They always speak english. most are legal

The two systems above are light years ahead of do gooder programs that create 'undocumented' who rarely speak english... have to live 2 or 3 families to a house. and who get cars that won't pass smog and insurance on it that they never pay a payment on. Looking the other way or handing our crumbs is not the answer. We have created a criminal class of families.

  • Need you lot sodded? Find El Patron. Buy the sod where he indicates. Be ready with cash in hand tomorrow.

He's legal. Classic Sod in Palm Beach is legal as well. The happy to be there army that sods two acres in an hour? Probably not so much.

  • here the legals are everything from insurance agents to mechanics to contractors to whatever. They are generally middle class. They understand what America is about.
