So I nipped in to the Tesla dealership

They do.
One of my sons decided in middle School he wanted to do welding. Took no electives his first year in high school so he could back load them into welding shop last two years. If he'd taken the damn test he would have been certified in (something. Whatever the wedding thing is).
Same thing with my little one.
Also, again, all he has to do is take some auto ace/ase (whatever) test.
They pour as many kids into those classes as they can, even have state competitions for each one of them. It's good stuff.

Here in California they had a shit ton of shop classes when I was going to school and then they slowly fell out of favor and there were really no shop classes for years... there seems to be a resurgence of shop classes lately.
My buddy offered to have high school kids come to his shop for a field trip or ten and learn how to do brake jobs... the paperwork and insurance and food dragging finally just pissed him off and he dropped the idea... too bad really.

your buddy had a fucking fantastic idea. woulda probably drawn a ton of kids into the business too, 'cause for all of our bitching in this field....it really is a fun/enjoyable/satasfying job.
i went through high school in the 70's. in our area we mostly just had auto shop, power mechanics(only 1 marking period sadly) metal shop and wood shop. there was a shop class where we learned the basics of working with plastic and vacuum molding, and one where we learned the basics of construction, although in that last one we never did any full scale work....just models.
the school systems ALL need to get back to this, and stop trying to convince every kid that they have a "right" to go to college.....'cause not everyone can be smart.

My kids high school has a wood/metal shop, all the equipment and a grant to pay for a teacher. And they can't get enough kids to sign up to have a class.

My son was amazed by the same thing. No one wants to work with their hands. They've bought into the useless leftist model.
-
My son wants to take a co-op construction class his senior year. He would have taken it this year but you have to provide your own transportation and he doesn't have his full license yet.
-
That boy and two others had run of the place for two years.
The teacher is a great guy, a near retirement aged man who in his youth worked the sugar mills and he lavished great practical knowledge on those kids.
The program was canceled in 2008 after my boy left. He was lucky.

I remember taking a apart a Briggs engine, all the way down to removing the rings, putting it back together, and watching it start, still remember it. Manassas, VA, where English speakers are now a minority

We did that too and then drained the oil and ran them to see how long they would go. Some ran the entire hour with no oil and would not die.

In seventh grade I took a small engines class and took apart the family mower, rebuilt the engine, took it back home and cut the grass with it.
I also took welding and wood working classes in Jr High. Some fucking spook burned my right arm with a red hot piece of round metal stock in the welding class. I had a scar for years from it but its finally gone after 40 years.

the only one of the shop classes i mentioned that was optional was auto shop. the others were required. as they should be.

Not EVERY kid is gonna go to college or learn a trade, but that's ok because we need chicken nuggets and titty dancers
-
Shop wasn't required as far back as I recall. It was elective and highly competitive to get in.

My metal shop teacher was a little Hawaiian hard ass named Mr Milu...
"If I catch you guys making anything that even resembles a pipe, you're outta here..."

LOL, My cabinet making teacher was a geriatric that didn't care what we did. I was turning out one hitters for the seniors at $5 each most of my freshman year.

Mr. Jim Love. What a great shop teacher.

In wood shop one kid made a pipe with a hidden stash in it. The teacher gave him an A for his ingenuity.
