Smart phones and instant/always connected - A school bans them

  • Yes I read the article. I do not believe in outright bans on anything, and certainly don't believe in schools conducting social experiments.

Oh... OK. It's just that you didn't really say this, initially. It would have been a good point to make instead of an anecdote about how your 14 year old is doing something the school actually hasn't forbidden.

And, on what planet is any school not a social experiment? Simply sending kids to a boarding school ranks pretty damned high on that list. Private schools, Christian Schools, charter schools, tech schools... all social experiments. This particular school is simply pushing kids back towards conversation and listening to things around them. I don't believe that's such an egregious step as to draw ire or non-applicable comparisons.

  • I agree with the phones being great for emergencies especially of the family type. I also agree that if one kept em on vibrate and just did a quick scan to see if the call was indeed an emergency? that would be good.

Soooo.... my power went out at 6 am it was not on when I got up at 7 No coffee! no computer! Soooo I had to fire up the smart phone and try to actually use it in a useful way.

'Say something' Ok.... PGE power outages... wait wait wait then get nonsense. Ok... try something else... wait wait wait... I use my computer. it is fast fast fast. I can also navigate easily. Smart phone? mostly? waste of time.

  • You get better results by typing what you want in whatever browser the phone has installed on it.

When the power would go out back when I was tied to the electrical grid like most of you poor souls still are, I would use my smart phone as a hotspot for my laptop if I needed a computer.

Lemme say that again... I don't care. If. The accusations against Trump. Are factual. Or not.

  • This is based AF. I confiscate phones when they enter my classroom, and lock them up. It's against district policy, but my principal looks the other way. If parents complained then she might have to stop me, but guess what, parents don't complain. In fact the kids rarely complain. My class is fun and popular and it's more fun if you actually engage with the work.
