THE HOME APPLIANCE THREAD - BUYING, SELLING, REPAIRS ETC.

  • Wife wants a new washer/dryer. The current one is 20 years old, but it still works. So we checked out what is available and options. I asked one of the sales guys if they have anything like the set we have (it is a stacking unit). The sales guys said oh no, you can't get them like that anymore. The ones that they make now only last 5-10 years. So, I said, shouldn't it be possible to make things better? Why wouldn't someone make a washer/dryer that lasts a long time? He said that the manufacturers sell more if they don't last as long and so they want people to switch them out often like people do with cell phones. He said the new washers and dryers also need more servicing than the older ones. I said whaaaaat? So I have been doing a little more leg work checking things out and it appears the guy might be right about that. Also it is getting hard to find a washer/dryer that doesn't require you to have it connected to an app on your cell phone. We don't want that.

Anybody have any suggestions? Thinking of buying a wash rack and tub to do the laundry to protest but the wife ain't going for that.

  • I have this and a matching dryer but a slightly older model that is not used with wifi

Works fine for its purpose. Looks like my model has already been discontinued but they have a lot of the basic units. Dont buy one with an auto sensing water fill capability. If that fill tube gets plugged, the washer will either start agitating dry the moment you turn it on with the cycles all screwed up or hardly fill at all. My old washer did that before it screwed up for good

  • I had a 1986 Kenmore drier for 19 years. I bought it used in 99. I cleaned out the lint a few times and replaced the belt once. I learned it was a 1986 when I had to google the part number for a new knob. I gave it to my brother in 2018 when I moved. He used it for about a year and then he said it died. I bet it's an easy fix, but it's 2500 miles away now and he can't fix anything.

As for suggestions, I think your course of action is obvious. Buy some old Whirlpools or Kenmores and fix them. That's how you get good quality repairable appliances.

  • Spend a little extra and go Maytag. You might not have to purchase another washer/dryer again. If feasable avoid stacked units.

  • I am with Bj on this one. I think my current washer dryer are about 25 years old. I got em about 20 years ago. People give em away or cheap... there is a used appliance place in the next town. The guy brings you a rebuilt set and hauls away the corpses. last washer I bought was like $150

I do a load a week about. The washer is getting old. On spin cycle it would bang into the dryer. I bought some springy feet things and now it is fine.

  • My biggest problem with replacing the washer dryer is that I have to go the stacking route. If I didn't have to go stacking, I would just find an old washer dryer like the Kenmore Goat mentioned. Those old dryers will keep running forever as you only need to replace the heating element every decade or so. Stacking washer/dryers are a whole different thing though unfortunately.

  • Mrs. Holden bought a new front loading washing machine and it lasted about 10 days after the warranty with the motherboard frying.

We kept the old one that we inherited from her parents. Late 60s or early 70s avocado color, mechanical timers and controllers and it still works.

That’s what keeps me from considering buying a Tesla… all the little wonderful do hickeys are terrific while they work and then all the sudden… nothing.

The hand crank windows on my 84VWGTI still work well.

  • Goat said old Kenmores . . .key there is OLD. We purchased a Kenmore front loading washer when we purchased the house . . . maybe they fixed the issues by now, but long story short the thing had a known life cycle of no more than 7 years.

Going by memory, Stainless steel drum with an aluminum spider assembly was perhaps the worst of it (galvanic corrosion)

And to get the spider assembly cost almost as much as a new machine.

In case you bothered to replace the aluminum part only to have it corrode again in 5-7 years, the drum was put together with screws that could contact the plastic tub during spin cycles. So the tub would have holes / leak eventually.

  • A few decades ago, Kenmores were rebadged Whirlpools. Maytags and some other brands were probably as good I guess. That has all changed with modern appliances. I have no idea who makes what now, but it's way different.
