You late model car guys..

  • My renter has a 2016 Chevy cruze.. Yeah.. not my cup of tea so to speak.. it was overheating. Me and my buddy replaced the things that were leaking like the overflow tank and hose.. no joy.. thing would not open the thermostat... Ok... new thermostat. everything seems good.. for about 10 miles the gage is right where it should be then wham.. full on overheat.

My thinking at this point is that it is the radiator? Plugged or partially plugged?

I let the thing idle in the driveway for 50 minutes. the gage never moved a 1/64th of an inch once it reached temp.... drove it to check... 5 miles of driving around and it was overheated.

  • Thanks... I figured that was all that was left. I can't believe that if the water pump did that tho that the car would sit and idle for 50 minutes in the driveway without overheating.

  • I have an infrared heat gun. Really helps to determine where the heat is and where it is or isn’t going.

Normally….You can watch the heat come from the motor and dissipate through the rad.

Newer cars should have enough airflow through the rad at normal speeds not to require any fan cooling.

  • Pop the stat leave the radiator return hose off and then see if you're pumping water out.

After you've checked to see if the fan clutch is working and that you can see engine block looking through the radiator of course.

    What the Fuck was that?

  • What he said, make sure the fan is coming on. And what Bronk said about pumps at high RPM, seen that as well.

Yeah those things make it a lot easier to figger out what's going on. You can get one that works fine for 20 bucks on Amazon.

Tell the owner to replace the Cruz with something reasonable. Chevy still makes some good vehicles, but the Daewoo/Opal/Cruz abortion isn't one of them.

  • I do have an heat gun... for some reason I forgot all about that. I bought a radiator and it will be here in a few days.... it was pretty cheap.

If that doesn't do it then it is water pump time. Scroat....yeah.... I hate that car but she is my renter and a single mom of two kids who works two jobs. She can't just go out and buy a Tesla like the left suggests. Especially if she can't sell this thing.

I did notice the fan comes on and off and when the thing gets hot the fan is on constantly.

I was just worried that there is some sensor of some such that I don't know squat about that is causing the problem.

When the new thermostat opens you can see water circulating a bit in the burp tank.... I say burp tank but it is really a combo top radiator tank and burp tank. The cooling system is pretty fucking strange on this car. I hate driving it even to test it out.

  • For that thing? the new radiator is cheap. I ran water wetter in my Healey cause that beast was a heat sink. Could not get enough radiator under the hood. I even ran two large heater cores in in series under the wheel well.

This thing is baffling. It only overheats under load (driving) Once the needle moves even to half (normal is a notch under) it takes less than a mile to go full hot.

Bleeding the system is important I have heard. Thought we did that. Oh well...
