Just got back from a few days in country. Since everything's almost done there was time to start enjoying the investment.

Mrs. got a Cheetah for her birthday so we took a few shots, found out she's potentially as formidable with a recurve as she is with a semi-auto...learned our dog really likes leaf piles...wandered about..found a lot of bones..

3 spots just out of the woods, one was a young deer, the others..not sure. Never saw anything like it last year. I wonder if there's a killer in the woods or just a concentration of really bad fortune.

The carcass is a young deer- a Doe, less than a year old. She was killed by a coyote (you can tell the way her bones were fractured) and then savaged by other smaller predators, mostly crows and rats. You can tell that by the rat turds in the picture.

    Yeah well,

That was my thought at the first carcass. But 3?

There's not much of a coyote problem thereabouts. I've heard more reports of bears than coyotes. And I'm not sure if they like woods as dense as we've got. The state just started requiring permits for wildcats. Don't remember which persuasion.

Guess it's time for some trail cams.

It's coyotes. Here in east TN they do not come out at all until well after sunset. Everyone shoots them on sight. Have a train blow the horn at night and you can hear the buggers yipping all over. You are in Kentucky? If so it is probably a similar coyote situation.

    Yeah well,

Not sure what rat turds wound up in frame. But there aren't any rats about. And we've got turkey vultures the size of buicks, as well as the odd hawk and owl. Don't think I've ever seen a crow. This ain't the city. Last year, I found a shed snake skin that was about 3' long. And it was only a piece.

Down by the spring I stumbled across a good sized snapping turtle...

But these remains were hundreds of yards apart. All under 100' from the treeline. All proximate to deer paths..

And don't coyotes howl in the moonlight? I hear cows from a mile away. Never heard a howl.

    Ninja Coyotes don't howl.

That's a common misconception. They actually do howl but you hear the sound first then you see their mouths move.

    Heh,

Played that vid and my dog came running..

Not trying to indulge some weird urge to be contrary. But coyotes never come up in conversation around there. I've never seen one there although I've got both coyote and a fox on my Chicago house's ring cam.

But I did get these from around the spring:

Deer tracks,,, and fresh ones. I'm guessing he's four years old and is a three point buck. He's been eating well too... look at the color of those buck berries! You can make tea out of those.

Hell Thruster, you don't need a trail cam- you have me.

The deer around here are "testing" positive for Covid. No, realy. PA's DNR put out a warning and said you should basically wear a hazmat suit to butcher one.

Feral dogs will do what coyotes do except no howling. They will often run and kill deer then not even eat them because it's what dogs do. As much as I love dogs I've shot a few strays years ago, cant do it in the city......
