To open a command prompt click the search box/magnifying glass on your task bar then type cmd, then click command prompt that appears.
Any of the major brands will be good. Prime day today and tomorrow. Other retailers are having sales too. You should be able to get a decent one for $80 or less. I'll post if I see an especially good deal.

Chances are your cable modem does NAT and it's safe to use (it's actually PAT but everyone calls it NAT). Are you sure it doesn't have built-in wireless? Some do, some don't. It might be turned off. If you can find the model we can look it up.
