Tinyhands wants to buy Greenland

  • Honest question,

Do you think you will ever work in the field you're degreed in

No, but its important to have a degree these days, shows a “minimum level of education”.

Just ask the boomers and Xers manning the tills in Burger King about that.

I have to admit, you old farts are REALLY pissy about working those jobs.

“I have a lifetime of experience, I have had more jobs than you have had hot dinners!”

Nobody cares, now I told you mop, so go mop

  • If you live in the UK and don’t want to be shit on by people, employers and banks, you need a degree.

Of course you can always learn a trade or start a business, but that can cause you issues with rentals and mortgages later down the road.

It is a funny old world.

How much does the 'class system' still apply there? (as opposed to say...50-75 years ago?)

  • That shit's alive and well here. We just pretend otherwise.

A dangerous ambition more often lurks behind the specious mask of zeal for the rights of the people than under the forbidden appearance of zeal for the firmness and efficiency of government. History will teach us that the former has been found a much more certain road to the introduction of despotism than the latter.

  • The toad is correct this time.

Of all tyrannies a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies, The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. — C.S. Lewis

  • And you paid for that degree yourself correct?

Yes I did, paid for the first three years with part time and summer jobs, although I got a loan for the last year so I could try out for the national rowing team.

See this Jeros? When you actually have to pay for your degree most reasonable people will pay for something they will actually use.

  • Buying Greenland would be fucking awesome if Tinyhands could pull it off. Too bad he's incompetent.

  • I just heard that only 20% of the available jobs require any sort of a degree. Also heard that 62% of all millenials are unhappy with the degree they chose.

"Don't let it end like this. Tell them I said something."

We have not had free degrees in a long time.

How much does the 'class system' still apply there? (as opposed to say...50-75 years ago?)

Much less than those days, but it still exists and interestingly exists a slightly different form.

Its very complicated, but there are many “incentives” for people not to move up or down in society.

Who you are, who you know and where you came from is as important as the money in your bank account.

This is why the Conservatives are such a joke here, one the one hand they play up to an American style economy with social mobility, but on the other hand they are playing the “Traditional British Values” card which were fucking terrible for like 90% of the population.

Its one of the reasons our Government is in such a state right now.

But its either them or the Marxists.

You mean "traditional American values" don't you?

Things like individual freedom and self-reliance, equality of opportunity and competition, the American dream and hard work and keeping what you earn...

Abraham Lincoln once said, "We . . . wish to allow the humblest man an equal chance to get rich with everybody else. When one starts poor, as most do in the race of life, free society is such that he knows he can better his condition; he knows that there is no fixed condition of labor for his whole life."
