In the ancient computer past, about 1986 there was an early multiplayer on-line air-combat simulator called Air Warrior. You flew a simulated World War II plane and fought with and against other players. In this prehistoric era the internet was not generally available outside the worlds of government and academia. Kesmai, the game's owner therefore used the online service GEnie for the game's networked communication.
One of those players improved the code and offered the improvements for free to Kesmai; people were that dedicated to the game. Kesmai ignored the improvements and spurned the offer. The coder, known as HiTech, then took the improvements and built a new game, Warbirds, that was much better.
